Energy taxation

Appe considers that the taxation of energy is an inappropriate instrument for achieving energy conservation in the context of sustainable development, let alone to stabilise carbon dioxide emissions. In view of the extremely low price elasticity of energy demand by the petrochemical industry (historic data reveal no significant correlation between oil prices and energy efficiency), such a tax would have no perceptible impact on energy consumption and thus on the resultant carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand, a tax on energy would further impair the competitive position of the European petrochemical industry (energy prices being already one third higher in Europe than in the USA) and deprive it of the funds it needs to further invest in energy efficiency improvements and new technologies.

Appe has always pressed for tax neutrality with regard to energy taxation.
