Coal Chemicals
Who we are
The Coal Chemicals Sector Group CCSG (organisation chart) comprises European producers of chemicals derived from coal tar distillation. The main product (approx. 50 %) of the tar refinery is pitch which is the residue of the distillation process. The distillates (aromatic oils) which represent the other about 50 % of coal tar are distilled into several fractions. The major single compounds of tar, for example Naphthalene (~10 %), Phenanthrene (~4,5 %) and Anthracene (~1,3 %), are found in these fractions. Some of compounds (for example Naphthalene, Anthracene and Carbazole) are commercially isolated.
Listed below you will find some of the major application for coal tar products.
Main Applications of coal tar distillation pitch and oils:
- Electrode binders for aluminium and electro-steel production
- Refractory materials
- Aromatic oils for the production of carbon black
- Timber impregnating oils
- Isolated aromatic base chemicals for the production of dyes, inks, pesticides, plasticizers, solvents, surfactants.
What we do
General targets:
- Develop a co-ordinated approach to health, environment and technical issues
- Influence harmonisation of chemical legislation
- Develop scientific data for coal-tar products based on sound science
- Link with European and National scientific bodies involved in health, environment and workers protection
- Link with industry associations and scientific bodies with an interest in the products
- Communicate the benefits of coal-tar products
Specific topics:
- Support of creosote as the wood preservative of the future, submitting the notification to the European Commission. The dossier was handed over to the Rapporteur Schweden in March 2004. Meanwhile the dossier was accepted to be formally complete and is distributed to the member states for evaluation. The environmental risk assessment was prepared in cooperation with the Western European Institute for Wood Preservation (WEI).
- Co-operation on risk assessment activities for pitch, Naphthalene and Anthracene
- Co-operation with the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) namely in the working group CEN TC 317 "Derivates from coal pyrolysis".
- Harmonisation of Material Safety Data Sheets, PDS-documents and of classification and transport regulations.
- Co-ordinate the newly-formed "REACH for Coal Chemicals (R4CC)" Consortium"
