The Amines Sector Group

Who we are

The Amines Sector Group is part of the Appe/Cefic Petrochemistry Industry Sector and includes producers of ethyleneamines, i.e.

  • Ethylenediamine (EDA), used to produce TAED (tetraacetylethylenediamine), EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid) and fungicides
  • Diethylenetriamine (DETA), mainly used as an epoxy curing agent and in the production of wet strength resins for paper
  • Higher amines, used to make additives for lubricating oils, engine fuels and asphalt

and producers of ethanolamines, i.e.

  • Monoethanolamine (MEA), used as the raw material to produce ethyleneamines and also to make detergents, metalworking fluids, and as gas sweetening
  • Diethanolamine (DEA), mainly used as gas sweetening and in agrochemicals
  • Triethanolamines (TEA), used in detergents and cosmetic applications and as a cement additive.

The Group is chaired by Hendrik Heising (BASF) and brings together the European producers of ethylene and ethanolamines (Akzo Nobel, BASF, Delamine, Dow Europe, Huntsman, Ineos Belgium, Sasol Germany).

What we do

As part of its ongoing remit, the Amines Sector Group mainly focuses on:

  • Maintaining a positive image for the products by promoting their safe and proper use
  • Maintaining a high level of technical understanding of the products, identifying the needs for scientific and environmental research, sponsoring the work when needed and working with scientists and regulators for the interpretation of results
  • Maintaining a dialogue with regulators, opinion leaders and trade associations
  • Gathering market intelligence.

On the health, safety and environment front, priorities include:

  • Monitoring regulatory developments affecting amines, formulating industry views and agreeing on co-ordinated action when necessary, e.g. on occupational exposure limits, EU Risk Assessment for piperazine, classification and labelling (DEA)
  • Developing harmonised information on health, safety and environmental issues in relation to amines
  • Liaising with EPSDG (US Ethyleneamines Product Stewardship Group) who are leading the work for ethylamines in the framework of the ICCA HPV initiative
  • Closely liaising with the ACC Ethanolamines Panel and co-ordinating industry research.

On the business front, priorities include gathering market intelligence and developing an understanding of the European market situation for amines within the legal framework of the European Union.
