The Acetyls Sector Group (ASG)
Who we are
The Acetyls Sector Group (ASG) covers products such as acetic acid, vinyl acetate and acetic anhydride, which are used as intermediates for a wide range of applications, from solvents to adhesives and water-based paints to cellulose acetate, pain-relieving pharmaceuticals, modified starches, emulsifiers, liquid crystal polymers and dyestuffs.
The Acetyls Sector Group represents the acetyls producers of Western Europe and importers with a significant share of the European market and is chaired by Peter Holl, Wacker-Chemie.
The following companies belong to ASG: BP Chemicals, Celanese Chemicals Europe, Dow Europe, Eastman Chemicals, Lonza, Lenzing, LyondellBasell Industries, Wacker-Chemie.
What we do
The primary objective of ASG is to ensure that the classification and other regulatory decisions relating to acetyls and primarily VAM (vinyl acetate monomers), both internationally and within Europe through EU and Member States authorities, are based upon a full and balanced evaluation of the scientific evidence.
The priorities are to:
- Provide active support to the lead company (Celanese) in co-ordinating the work for complying with the REACH regulation
- Co-ordinate with the US industry research and assimilate findings into European regulatory activities.
As part of its ongoing remit, ASG is also committed to:
- Monitoring the acetic acid and acetic anhydride legislation and informing all parties involved including national chemical federations
- Collecting monthly and quarterly statistics
- Monitoring EU imports into the EU from countries under the General System of Preferences (GSP) and taking action to address any unfair trade issues that may arise.
- The formation of 3 REACH consortia for acetic acid, acetic anhydride and vinyl acetate is now completed. These consortia will facilitate the registration of these substances as required by the regulation. Further information available in the REACH section.
